This course will train you in supporting those experiencing a range of mental health issues and begin your journey to working as a Mental Health Support Worker, Community Support Worker, or Case Worker.  This qualification focuses on the support and needs of people experiencing mental health issues. You'll learn about the value and principles of mental health sector and how to apply them in a recovery oriented way.

Work involves implementing community based programs and activities focusing on mental health, mental illness and psychiatric disability. Work is undertaken in a range of community contexts such as community based non-government organisations; home based outreach; centre-based programs; respite care; residential services, rehabilitation programs; clinical settings; or supporting people in employment. Work is carried out autonomously under the broad guidance of other practitioners and professionals.

  • Want to work with and support people experiencing mental health issues and/or psychosocial disability.
  • Commit to the values of dignity, respect, inclusion, recovery, and empowerment.
  • Commit to positively engaging, interacting, and working with people who have complex needs.
  • Be able to observe and identify changes in behaviour, abilities, and environment.
  • Be able to work independently and within a team.
  • Have strong communication and listening skills to liaise and work with a variety of individuals.
  • Be a problem-solver with the ability to respond to immediate safety risks.
  • Be tolerant, patient, and willing to work with people from different backgrounds and cultures, as well as those living with cognitive impairment.
